Peter Kellner, a young Slovak bass, is considered one of the most promising opera singers of his generation. Early in his career, he performed with some of the world’s most important opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera New York, the Royal Ballet and Opera London, the Staatsoper Berlin, and the Salzburger Festspiele.
In 2018, he joined the ensemble of the Vienna State Opera, where he has performed major roles such as Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro), Leporello and Masetto (Don Giovanni), Guglielmo (Così fan tutte), Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), Kecal (The Bartered Bride), Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Colline (La Bohème), Frère Laurent (Roméo et Juliette), Re di Scozia (Ariodante), Theseus (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Il Re (Aida), Nachtwächter (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), and Zuniga (Carmen).
In the upcoming season, he will make his debut at the San Francisco Opera as Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro) and will appear for the first time as Rocco in the premiere of Leonora by Ferdinando Paer at the Semperoper Dresden.
Recent highlights include his debut as Kecal in The Bartered Bride at the Vienna State Opera, Don Alvaro in the premiere of Rossini’s Il viaggio a Reims at the Salzburg Festival, Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor at the Semperoper Dresden, and Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro) at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
His core repertoire includes Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro)—performed at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Vienna State Opera, Glyndebourne Festival, Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin, Komische Oper Berlin, Edinburgh Festival, Volksoper Wien, and Oper Graz; Leporello (Don Giovanni) at the Vienna State Opera, Opéra de Normandie Rouen, and Slovak National Theatre; Papageno (Die Zauberflöte) at Teatro Colón Buenos Aires, Vienna State Opera, Royal Ballet and Opera London, Teatro Giuseppe Verdi Trieste, and Teatro de la Maestranza Seville; Colline (La Bohème) at the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Ballet and Opera London, Semperoper Dresden, Vienna State Opera, and Oper Graz; Osmin (Die Entführung aus dem Serail) at Staatsoper Hamburg and Oper Graz; Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia) at Festival della Valle d’Itria and Oper Graz; and the Water Gnome (Rusalka) at the National Theatre Prague.
His concert repertoire includes works such as Verdi’s Requiem, Mozart’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Stabat Mater (Dvořák, Puccini, Rossini), and Haydn’s The Creation, among many others.
Peter Kellner participated in the Young Singers Project at the Salzburg Festival in 2012 and 2013 and has since returned regularly as a guest. He was a member of the ensemble at Oper Graz from 2015 to 2018. His awards include the Independent Opera Fellowship at the Wigmore Hall Song Competition, second prize and the audience award at the International Mozart Competition Salzburg, and first prize at the International Ferruccio Tagliavini Competition in Deutschlandsberg.
He has collaborated with distinguished conductors such as Sir Antonio Pappano, Vasily Petrenko, Adam Fischer, Marco Armiliato, Ivor Bolton, Philippe Jordan, and Gianluca Capuano, and has performed with orchestras including the Vienna Philharmonic, Camerata Salzburg, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Bamberger Symphoniker, and Prague Philharmonic.
Born in Slovakia, Peter Kellner studied at the Conservatory in Košice with M. Adamenko, at the Mozarteum Salzburg with B. Bakow, and completed his bachelor’s degree with Antonio Sol at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.
